Missoula Children's Theatre returns to Orléans Jan. 30

The Missoula Children's Theatre company will be making its annual stop in Orléans next week starting with auditions on Monday and culminating with a musical production next Saturday entitled "The Wiz of the West".

The Missoula Children's Theatre company is based in Missoula, Montana. The comapny's mission is to help produce plays with a message for kids under the age of 18. They are commissioned to stage the plays by volunteer producers who are resposible for everything from advertising to ticket sales.

Missoula's directors then fan out across North America, usually in pairs, with a trailer full of costumes, props, and scripts.

The beauty about Missoula Children's productions is that they are able to incorporate up to 60 young actors and make them all feel part of the play. One of the ways they accomplish that task is by incorporating several ensemble musical numbers. There's even an opportunity for those who don't earn a part in the play to help out backstage as assistant directors.

The Missoula Children's Theatre company returns to Orleans next week for the production of 'The Wiz of the West'. Rehearsals will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 1at Ecole secondaire Béatrice-Desloges starting at 4:30 p.m. File photo

The productions are all not-for-profit which means that they are run on a purely cost recovery basis. The primary aim in establishing the registration fee, which is only $35, is accessibility and inclusion. As a result, it is not unusual to see two and even three siblings in the same production.

The fee is only paid after a child has passed the auditions. The auditions are absolutely free. This year's auditions will take place in Room 124 at École secondaire Béatrice-Desloges starting at 4:30 p.m. sharp. Latecomers will be turned away.

The parts are assigned based on age. The chorus usually consists of children under the age of 10 while the principal characters are all in the 14- to 17-year-old range.

Once an individual has passed the audition, they are expected to make themselves available for the remainder of the week. Rehearsals are held between 4:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Not all actors will be required at all rehearsals, but everyone rehearsing must be available during the set hours. The younger actors will rehearse earlier in the evening. A final rehearsal will be held Saturday morning followed by two performances at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
