Coro
Vivo Ottawa will be presenting the third in a series of
commented performances at Orléans United
Church next month celebrating the rich tapestry of world
music.
A
commented concert is one in which the conductor, or another
individual, provides an ongoing commentary of the program
for the audience.
For
Coro Vivos May 20 concert, A World of Song,
the commentary will be provided by maestro Antonio Llaca.
The
program will take the audience on a musical tour of the
world, offering a window into the unique individuality
and idiosyncrasy of various cultures through their music.
Vocal
music plays a key role in global folk traditions, and
for good reason, as each one of us comes into the world
with our own unique musical instrument: our voice.
A
World of Song will focus on one of the most genuine
forms of artistic expression in any culture: folk music.
As the program unfolds, Llaca will provide commentary,
knowledge and understanding on what makes world music
so colourful and unique.
Coro
Vivos last commented performance was in the spring
of 2013. Music for Romantics showcased the
music of 19th century composers such as Brahms and Schubert
whose compositions defined an era in music.
Between
each piece, Llaca provided the audience a unique insight
into both the composition and the composer which enriched
the overall experience.
A
World of Song will be no different, and in the end
what truly makes Coro Vivos performances so special
is the chorus itself.
Founded
more than 30 years ago as the Blackburn Chorus, Coro Vivo
Ottawa has evolved into one of the premiere choral ensembles
in the city.
The
chorus holds open auditions each spring in search of new
members. This year the auditions will be held on May 24
and 25.
Besides
performing three concerts, chorus members also sing at
senior residences, hospitals and civic events throughout
the year. The choir also conducts special concerts for
sponsors and participates in fund-raisers for other community
organizations.
Tickets
for A World of Music are currently available
at Compact Music on Bank Street, and Leading Note, which
is located at 370 Elgin St. The cost is $20 per person.
They will also be available at the door prior to the 8
p.m. performance.
