City reopens
Petrie Island beaches
By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online
Green flags are once
again flying over Petrie Island today after the City of Ottawa lifted its
no swimming advisory for the island's three beaches.
The beaches were
closed last Friday after an estimated eight million litres of raw sewage
was dumped into the Ottawa River when a regulator was jammed open on Thursday.
The problem was caused by a steel plate that had somehow broken loose from
a work being down on the same sewer line.
Health officials
had ordered people to avoid body contact with the water until further tests
were completed. On Tuesday, the health department said tests results showed
that the bacteria levels in the water had returned to normal.
