Orléans councillor kicks off re-election bid in front of
300 supporters By Fred Sherwin Orléans Online
Orléans
Ward Coun. Bob Monette launched his re-election campaign on Tuesday night in front
of 300 supporters at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School. Flanked
by signs listing his accomplishments since 2006, Monette said that he wanted to
run for one more term and continue the fight to keep the proposed interprovincial
bridge out of Orléans. The
room was also filled with placards listing endorsments from a number of prominent
community leaders including Cardinal Creek Community Association president Jean-François
Claude, former Common Sense Crossings president Louis Caron and Ace Body Shop
owner and community advocate Lionel Laurin who said that Monette had earned his
endorsement for the work he's done since first getting elected to council in the
2005 byelection. "One
must first earn my trust and Bob Monette has earned it," stated Laurin who
wrapped up the lon list of guest speakers. A
number of prominent politicians were also in the room to lend their support including
Mayor Larry O'Brien and Ottawa-Orléans MP Royal Galipeau. As
yet, no one else has registered to run against Monette who sent out a challenge
to anyone who might be considering tossing their hat into the ring. "Bring
it on," he said confidently. Besides
issuing a challenge to any potential opponents, Monette also used the occasion
to announce Carivibe 2010! The Caribbean cultural event will be held on June 20
and will include a parade down St. Joseph Blvd. followed by a party on Petrie
Island. (This
story was made possible thanks to the generous support of our local
