City to open Hwy. 174 eastbound lane during rush hour

The
long drive home for east end commuters caused by the Hwy.
174 sinkhole should be a little shorter this afternoon
as the City opens one eastbound lane through the affected
area.
The
lane. which will be open between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. should
allow commuters from Cumberland Village and points further
east, including Clarence Rockland, to use Hwy. 174 which
should, in turn, shorten the commute for Orléans
residents using St. Joseph Blvd. or St. Joseph Blvd.
Work
on replacing the damaged culvert and repairing the road
is expected to be completed over the weekend and the highway
should be reopened in time for the afternoon drive home
on Monday..
The
cost of repairs is expected to top $4 million, nearly
three times as much as the scheduled relining of the culvert
woud have cost before it collapsed.
