Former
students at staff will be gathering at St. Peter High
School this weekend to renew friendships and take a stroll
down memory lane as the school celebrates its 20th anniversary.
The
school opened in 1992 with just over 900 students. Today,
enrollment is close to 1,900, making it the largest Catholic
high school in the city. Over the years more than 3,000
students have passed through its doors including two students
who are now teachers.
James
Olsheskie graduated Class of '98. Brad Davison the year
after. Both men remember St. Peter in the early days,
when the school backed onto a large forest and the sound
of new construction was in the air.
The
school grew as the community around it grew. During the
early 1990s, Orléans was the fastest growing community
in Canada. Within years of the school's opening, the forest
of trees was replaced by a forest of portables. The rapid
growth in enrollment led to the construction of a two
storey addition in 2002.
Over
the years, the school has been successful in a number
of sports, winning a plethora of city championships in
football, basketball, soccer and touch football.
The
ground work for the school's athletic programs was laid
down by St. Peter's first principal Peter Linegar who
insured that the teachers he hired were committed to extra-curricular
activities and sports in particular.
That
commitment to extracurricular activities has carried down
through the years through a series of principals starting
with Linegar and continuing on with Brent Wilson, Anne-Marie
McGillis, John Karam, Sue Arbour and Norma MacDonald who
is the school;'s current principal.
Among
St. Peter's most well known graduates are singer Keisha
Chanté, NHLer Jonathan Matsumoto, Canadian Olympic
basketball player Courtnay Pilypaitis and Ottawa 67s captain
Cody Ceci.
The
reunion will kick-off Friday night with meet-and-greets
at several different local restaurant based on the graduating
year.
Graduates
from 1993-97 will meet at Johnny Canuck's Bar and Grill,
1998 to 2002 at Broadway Bar and Grill, 2003-06 at the
Barley Mow and 2007-10 at D'Arcy McGee's Restaurant Bar.
There
will be events at the school all day on Saturday, including
alumni basketball and touch football games. The senior
boys football team will also take to the field against
rival St. Matt's and the girls basketball team will take
to the court as well. A lunch BBQ will be hosted by the
girls touch football team from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
The
festivities will be wrapped up with a reunion dance on
Saturday night in the cafetorium and atrium. Tickets for
the event can be purchased at the door for $25.
