Annual
report card gives high marks to east end elementary schools
By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online
East
end elementary schools are among the most successful in
the province according to the most recent Report Card
on Ontario's Elementary Schools compiled by the Vancouver-based
Fraser Institute.
Of
the 31 area French and English public and Catholic schools
included in this year's report, 14 saw at least 85 per
cent of their students either meet or exceed the provincial
average on the 2012 EQAO province-wide tests in reading,
writing and math. Of the 14, at least 90 per cent of the
students at nine schools either met or exceeded the provincial
average.
École
élémentaire publique Le Prélude topped
the list with 95.2 per cent of its students either meeting
or exceeding the provincial average. Four other French-language
schools filled out the top five, including École
élémentaire publique L'Odyssé in
Convent Glen which received a score of 8.6 out of 10 from
the Fraser Institue, tying it with Chapel Hill Catholic
School as the highest ranked schools in Orléans.
École
élémentaire catholique Étolie de
l'Est in Chapel Hill is ranked third with an 8.4 rating,
Le Prélude is fourth on the list at 8.3, and Convent
Glen Catholic, École élémentaire
catholique Ste-Marie in Blackburn Hamlet and École
élémentaire catholique St-Joseph d'Orléans
are all tied for fifth with a 7.9 rating.
Maple
Ridge Elementary School is the top Ottawa District School
Board school on the list at number nine with a 7.6 rating.
Trillium Elementary School is two spots down with a 7.1
rating and Fallingbrook Elementary school received a score
of 7.1, placing it 12th on the list. It's important to
note, however, that six area public board schools did
not make the Report Card due to insuffient data including
Forest Valley, Terry Fox, an Convent Glen Public.
The
most improved score belonged to École élémentaire
catholique Ste-Marie which received a 5.5 rating in 2011.
Trillium also did well, improving their score from 5.5
out of 10 in 2011 to 7.1.
École
élémentaire catholique Arc-en-Ciel went
in the opposite direction dropping 7.8 to 5.3
The
Report Card lists standardized-test results in reading,
writing and math for Grades 3 and 6 from 2006 to 2012
and then uses the data to rate and rank the 2,714 elementary
schools included in the study.
Of
the top 10 schools in Ottawa, L'Odyssé and Chapel
Hill are ranked ninth and 10th respectively.
The
scores are based on a combination of factors including
the results of last years EQAO scores in reading,
writing and math for Grades 3 and 6; the gap between the
male and female results (the wider gap the lower the score);
and the percentage of students who failed to meet the
minimum provincial standard.
Overall,
22 of the 31 east end schools scored above the provincial
average which was 6.0. As a group the English Catholic
board schools received an average mark of 6.5, while the
English public board schools received an average mark
of 6.4. By comparison, the 10 French Catholic board schools
received an average mark of of 6.6 and the five French
public board schools received an average mark of 7.6.
The
scores for the 31 east end schools included in the report
are listed in the colour coded chart below. The full report
card can be viewed at www.fraserinstitute.ca.
