A 54-year-old woman is dead and a 24-year-old man is in hospital in critical condition following a two car accident at a rural Cumberland intersection early Sunday morning.

According to police reports the two cars collided at the intersection of Dunning and Beaton roads shortly before 7:45 a.m.

The woman who was driving one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene, while the male driver of the second car had to be extricated by fire crews before being transferred to hospital with "life-threatening traumatic abdominal injuries".

There are also reports that the man faces possible DUI charges after it was determined that speed and alcohol may have played a role in the sccident.

Long stretches of both roads were closed and the intersection was blocked with police tape as officers from the collision unit investigated. The roads reopened around 1 p.m. Sunday.
