St. Joseph remains closed as work continues on broken watermain, sinkhole

By Fred Sherwin

St. Joseph Boulevard will remain closed until at least midday as city crews repair a broken watermain that created a large sinkhole in front of the Service Ontario office on Monday.

The broken pipe is about 61 centimetres in diameter. It was gushing water for about 45 minutes before workers were able to cutoff the supply. The road had to be closed between St. Pierre and Gabriel Streets forcing traffic to detour along Hwy. 174 or Jeanne d'Arc Blvd.

OC Transpo routes 132 and 134 have also been detoured.

Damage to the pipe, which was installed in the 1970s, did not disrupt water services in the area.
