Local residents flock to Sir Wilfrid Laurier High School for free flu shot

Close to 300 people, many of them children, flocked to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School on Satuday to take advantage of a special flu shot clinic in the wake of heightened anxiety over the HINI virus.

Officials with Ottawa Public Health reported a hgh turnout at Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School, as well as a second special clinic held at 100 Constellation Cres. in the west end.

A number of the people asked, cited wanting to protect their children from the H1N1 virus, also known as bird flu, for braving yesterday's freezing rain to get to the local clinic.

"“We’re certainly in the middle of flu season and because of the media attention of the flu happening both here and in Alberta, Saskatchewan and British Columbia we’ve seen a lot of demand for our clinics that we have for children under five and their families,” says Dr. Carolyn Pim, Ottawa's associate medical officer of health.'

A number of the flu shot recipients on Saturday were children under the age of five who are particularly susceptible to contracting the H1N1 virus. Provincial regulations prevent pharmacies authorized to administer the flu shot from giving it to children in that age group. However, parents can still get their children vaccinated through their family doctor or by making an appointment with Ottawa Public Health.

The rest of the general public can still get vaccinated at a number of select pharmacies. There are a number of pharmacies authoized to administer the flu vaccine in Orleans. They are Asclepios Pharmacy at 750 Taylor Creek Dr., Crown Pointe Pharmacy at 900 Watters Rd., Triple A Pharmacy at 1675 Tenth Line Rd. and Shoppers Drug Mart at 1937 Portobello Blvd., the Target Pharmacy in Place d'Orléans, the Sobeys Pharmacy on Trim Road and all Shoppers Durg Marts.
