Cat perishes, but family members safe after fire breaks out in Navan Road home

Four members of the Vale family managed to escape their Navan Road home with their two dogs on Saturday after a fire broke out in the basement stairwell.

Unfortunately the family cat didn't make it out, and was likely the victim of smoke inhalation.

The fire, which caused heavy black smoke, started just before 6:30 p.m. at 5826 Navan Road, which is just west of Tenth Line Road. Fire fighters responding to the call were able to limit the damage to the stairwell and parts of the first floor and basement near the stairs.

The combination of structural damage, smoke damage and water damage is estimated at $50,000.

The family was not allowed to return to the house pending further investigation of the cause of the fire.
