The St. Matthew Tigers got off to a solid start at the OFSAA 'AAA' basketball championships in Ottawa this morning, downing the St. Joseph's Jaguars from Barrie 62-38.

The game was tied 13-13 after the first quarter, when the Tigers stepped up their game defensive game and started pulling away with a series of transition baskets and fast break points.

By the end of the first half they had a 12-point lead, which they extended to 24 points by the end of the third quarter. From there they simply traded baskets through the remainder of the game or the win.

Garnet Blais led the way for the Tigers with 28 points, Jeff Plunkett scored a game high 12 points for the Jaguars.

With the win the Tigers improved their record to 41-1 this season. Their only loss came against Loyola Secondary School in the second round of the
All-Catholic Provincial Championships in January.

Loyola is ranked third in the OFSAA tournament, while St. Matt's is ranked number one. If everything goes according to forum the two teams will have a rematch tomorrow afternoon at 6 p.m. But first St. Matt's must get past the winner of the first round match-up between Emery Collegiate Institute and Bawating Collegiate and Vocational School. The second round game will be played at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Ridgemont High School.
