The Cumberland
Grads downed the Hawkesbury Hawks
7-0 on Sunday as Adam Laderoute earned what was undoubtedly the easiest
shutout of his CJHL career.
Laderoute faced
three shots in the first two periods and nine shots overall in picking up
his second shutout of the season and fifth shutout since joining the Grads
prior to the 2006 playoffs.
The Grads outshot
the Hawks 14-1 in the first period alone as they picked up where they left
off Friday night when they handed the Pembroke Lumber Kings only their third
loss of the season.
All five players
who scored against the Lumber Kings would factor into the scoring against,
the Hawks including Sean Bamford and Brent Bisdee who scored a pair of first
period goals to give the Grads an early 2-0 lead.
Michael Borkowski
extended the Grads lead to 3-0 in the opening minute of the second period
as Cumberland continued their onslaught against an obviously overmatched
Hawks team.
After the lopsided
first period, the Grads peppered Hawks netminder Philippe Magnan with 16
shots in the second, despite having to kill off a 5-on-3 for a full minute
followed by a 5-on-4 for an another two minutes. Matt Miller would give
the Grads a 4-0 lead at the 7:47 mark of the period.
Things went from
bad to worse in the third for the Hawks who started to take a number of
not so smart penalties. Brett Madigan put the Grads up 5-0 on a delayed
penalty to Sebastien Lavoie at the 7:13 mark of the third and then Matheu
Ouellette ended a nine game goal scoring drought with a power play marker
21 seconds later as Lavoie watched from the penalty box.
Grads defenceman
Kevin Tansey drove the final nail in the coffin with his third goal of the
year less than a minute later.
Of the six shots
the Hawks managed to get in the third period, three of them came in the
final two minutes, forcing Laderoute to make a couple of key saves to preserve
his doughnut.
After the game,
Grads head coach Paul Flindall said he was happy with his team's effort,
especially in light of the fact that they had just upset the number one
team in the league on their ice.
"I was a
little worried they might have a bit of a letdown, but we asked for the
same type of work ethic and they gave it to us. They stuck to the game plan
and they played 60 minutes of solid hockey," said Flindall.
The Grads now
have four days off before taking on the Smiths Falls Bears in Smiths Falls
on Friday. Their next home game is on Sunday against the Nepean Raiders.
Puck drops at 3 p.m.
