With the Christmas
break only a week away, the Cumberland Grads were in a giving mood on Sunday
as they gave up seven unaswered goals against a surging Kanata Stallions
team who handed them their fourth straight loss.
While the score
might indicate the Stallions completely dominated the Grads, the fact of
the matter is that the Grads made the Stallions look like world beaters
by taking needless penalties, commiting countless turnovers, and playing
target practice with the crest on the front of Stallions' goaltender Sebastien
Parker's sweater.
It also didn't
help that Grads' netminder Adam Laderoute had one of his worst games this
season, allowing six goals on 27 shots before being pulled in favour of
Adam Mohr in the third period.
The Grads actually
started off well jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead on a pair of goals
by Mike Lemay and Mark Borkowski, while Laderoute stopped all 10 of the
shots he face in the opening stanza.
Things quickly
started to fall apart in the second period, however, after Laderoute allowed
a couple of suspect goals that were very makeable. The trickle turned into
a tidal wave as the Stalliong turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead in a
matter of two minutes and 53 seconds. They would add one more near the end
of the second to cap a five goal run.
The Grads didn't
help their cause any by taking a total of seven penalties, two of which
resulted in Kanata power play goals.
The team is still
locked in a four-way battle for fourth place, but they are no longer have
the upper hand. The Nepean Raiders (43pts) and the Gloucester Rangers (42pts)
both have games in hand, while the Ottawa Jr. Senators who trail the Grads
by three points in seventh place have three games in hand.
Cumberland has
three more games to play before the Christmas break starting with a visit
to the Nepean Sportsplex on Wednesday for a game against the Raiders. They
then play Carleton Place and Smiths Falls in back-to-back games on Friday
and Saturday in Kemptville.
The Grads will
take a two week break over the holidays before returning back to action
at the Navan Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 6for a game against the Cornwall Colts.
