quarterfinal series with Lumber Kings By
Fred Sherwin Orléans Online The
Cumberland Grads shocked the Pembroke Lumber Kings with a 5-2 win at the Navan
Arena on Thursday night to even their quarterfinal series at a game apiece. The
Grads relied on their special teams to build a 4-1 lead midway through the game
and then held off the Lumber Kings in the third period for the improbable win. Michael
Borkowski lead things off with a power play goal six minutes and 20 seconds into
the first period. The Lumber Kings wasted little time in responding as Damian
Cross banged the equalizer past Adam Laderoute 14 seconds later. Unfazed,
the Grads would score twice more in the opening stanza, including another power
play goal by Borkowski in the final minute of the period. Greg
Sartoretto`s shorthanded marker at the 7:08 mark of the second stanza would give
the Grads a 4-1 lead before the game was half over. Daniel Goyette then scored
unassisted at the 17:53 mark of the period to give the Grads a four goal lead
heading into the final 20 minutes. The
Lumber Kings did their best to mount a comeback in the third stanza, outshooting
Cumberland 10-5, but they only managed to get a goal for their efforts.and the
Grads skated off the ice with the 5-2 win. Laderoute
earned the game's first star honours for stopping 26 of 28 shots, including several
of the difficult variety. Borkowski was named the game's second star and Goyette
