Kings dominate Grads at home, take 2-1 series lead
By Fred Sherwin Orléans
Online When
the Cumberland Grads upended the Pembroke Lumber Kings on home ice last Thursday
night to even their quarterfinal series at a game apiece, you knew there was a
risk that might have woken up a sleeping giant. Well
on Sunday the giant did wake up and he took care of business in impressive fashion,
limiting the Grads to just three shots in each of the first two periods while
peppering Cumberland netminder Adam Laderoute with 42 shots enroute to a 7-1 win. The
game also saw it's share of rough stuff, especially in the third period when the
score was out of reach and the result was a foregone conclusion. There were 106
penalty minutes in all, 86 of which were assessed in the third, including six
inciting an opponent calls. The
Lumber Kings outshot the Grads 10-3 in the first period to take a 3-0 lead on
goals by Tyler Tosunian, Keith Clarke and Ahmed Mahfouz. The
game was even more lopsided in the second as the Lumber Kings continued to bombard
the Grad's net with shots. Despite being outshot 19-3, however, Cumberland managed
to only allow a goal while getting one of their own on the power play. Matt
Miller scored on a pass from Michel Nooyen to briefly narrow the deficit to 3-1,
before Kyle Just scored to put Pembroke back in front by three. The
Lumber Kings would added three more in the third, including a pair by Clarke to
complete his hat trick and one from former Grad Mitch Gallant to close out the
scoring. The
Grads will be hoping to take advantage of home ice when the series returns to
Navan on Tuesday night, Game time is 7 p.m. (Posted
6:30 a.m., March 15) Return
