Former
St. Peter Knight standout Courtney Pilypaitis recently saw her U.S. college career
draw to a close as her 10th ranked University of Vermont Catamounts lost to the
2nd ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the second round of the NCAA women's basketball
tournament. Pilypaitis
scored 11 points and added seven rebounds, seven assists and seven steals as the
Catamounts fell 84-86 to the Fighting Irish. The
11 points brought her career total up to 1,993, third best all-time at the university.
She also finished second in career steals with 279, first in assists with 638,
first in games played with 131, and first in three point shots made with 260,
shattering the old mark by 66. She
became the only player in the America East Conference history with over 1,000
career points, 500 steals and 500 rebounds. And was the only actibe player in
women's college basketball to have over !,900 points. 800 rebounds and 800 assists. But
more impressively, she led her team to a second striaght America East Championship
and a second straight automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they recived
the highest seed in the school's history. It
was obviously well-deserved as they pulled off the upset over the seventh seeded
Wisconsin Badgers in the first round. Pilypaitis scored a game-high 25 points
in the historic win, while adding eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
The win gave Vermont 27 on the season, the most ever by a Catamount team. Pilypaitis
basketball future is uncertain at this point, although she will likely continue
to compete for the national women's team. Last summer she [played for Team Canada
at the World University Games in Belgrade where the team placed 15th. Previously
she played for the U21 and U19 national teams. (This
