Teams representing the four east end leagues that make up part of the Gloucester Hockey Association won 10 championship banners on the weekend as the minor hockey season came to a thrilling conclusion at the Earl Armstrong Arena.

The Cumberland Minor Hockey Association led the way with four division titles; Gloucester Centre won three; the Blackburn Hockey Association won two and the Orleans Minor Hockey Association won one.

During the opening day of the championship finals on Saturday, three of the games had to be settled in extra time including the Atom B2 final between the Blackburn Stingers and the Cumberland Ice Dogs. The Stingers won 4-3 on a goal from Maxime Dubois, two minutes into the first overtime session.

Dylan Hansen scored two goals in regulation for the Stingers, who placed sixth in the regular season standings, six points ahead of the Ice Dogs who finished eighth.

Overtime wasn't as kind to the Cumberland Fireballs who lost 3-2 to the Russell Warriors in the Atom C final. Justine Aiseneau scored both of the Fireballs goals in regulation.

The Gloucester Centre Cougers won three of the four Novice championships up for grabs on the weekend.

The Cougars downed the Blackburn Stingers 3-2 on goals from Daniel Seabi, Cameron Last and William Cox to win the Novice A title, and the Gloucester Centre #2 squad won the Novice B championship with a 5-4 overtime win over the Leitrim Hawks.

The Cougars also won the Novice C championship with a 4-2 win over Cumberland in the opening game on Sunday morning. Antonio Gareau had two goals for the winning team, while Owen Iving added a goal and two assists.

The Novice B2 championship was won by the Blackburn Stingers who defeated the Cumberland Thunder 1-0 on a goal by Brendon Sommers at the 10:17 mark of the third period.

In Peewee action, Joshua Belanger had four goals in Cumberland's 6-4 win over Gloucester Centre in the Peewee B2 final. Unfortunately, the Cumberland All Stars came up short in their bid to win the Peewee C championship, losing 4-3 to the Russell Warriors in double overtime. Jacob Milbury had two goals in a close game for the All Stars.

The Cumberland Snipers won Cumberland's second championship banner, downing the Blackburn Stingers 2-1 in the Bantam A final. After Brandon Gun scored for the Stingers at the 8:38 mark of the second period, Martin Goudreault tied the game at the 5:20 mark of the third stanza and then set up Stephen Evans for the winning goal with 2:33 left in the game.

In other bantam action, the Cumberland Thunder lost 3-0 to Leitrim in the B1 final and the Orleans Titans fell 6-3 to Russell in the B2 championship game.

One of the most thrilling games of the weekend occurred in the Midget A final where the Orleans Bandits held off the Russell Warriors in the final minute and 30 seconds to win 4-3.

The Bandits got goals from Sebastien Chouinard, Kayle Turpin, Alexandre Champagne and Joey Samuel, while Mathieu Boisvert was called upon to make several big saves to preserve the win.

The Warriors threw everything they had at the Bandits who had to play the final two minutes of the game a man down after being called for an infraction. Russell tried to increase their odds by pulling their goalie with a minute to go to give themselves a two-man advantage, but Boisvert was equal to the challenge.

In other Midget action, Zachary Towers-Harvey and Mathieu Nadeau-Lemire shared the goaltending duties as the Orleans Devils shutout the Orleans Broskis 5-0 in the Midget B1 final and David Perera scored the overtime winner as Cumberland #5 downed Cumberland #3 in the Midget B2 final.

The final game of the weekend was another all-Cumberland affair between Cumberland #1 and Cumberland #3 in the Juvenile championship.

Cumberland #1 scored four unanswered goals in the third period to take a relatively comfortable 7-3 lead, or so they thought.

With 1:40 left to go in the game, Cumberland #3 exploded for three goals in less than a minute to make it a one goal game. They continued to press for the equalizer in the remaining 45 seconds, but Cumberland #1 managed to hold on for the win.
