Not even a bad fall in the final stretch of the junior girls 300-metre hurdles could stop Louis-Riel's Amanda McKinnon from being a triple event winner at the NCSSAA track and field championships on Thursday.

Running in her third event of the day, MacKinnon had a commanding lead in the 300-metre final when she clipped the final hurdle with her trailing foot and crashed to the track. Fortunately she had the presence of mind to get back to her feet quickly and beat the second place runner to the finish line..

"I have no idea what happened. I've never done that before," McKinnon said after the race.

Earlier in the day she won the 80-metre hurdles in a time of 12:53 seconds and the 400-metres in a time of 59.45. McKinnion is hoping to qualify for the provincial championships in all three events at the OFSAA regional meet in Belleville next week.

Her ultimate goal is to make the podium in the 300-metre hurdles at the provincial championships next month after placing fourth last year.

"That's what I want. I want a medal," says McKinnon.

Sixty-three other east end athletes will be hoping to qualify for the provincial championships at next week's regional meet after placing in the top five this week. The NCSSAA championships were held in the Louis-Riel Dome while work continues on a new synthetic track at the Terry Fox Facility.

Lindsay Kary will be one of those athletes hoping to qualify for OFSSAA after winning the midget girls 800 and 1500 metres. The St. Matthew High School student ran a personal best 2:26.57 in the 800 and then blew away the field in the 1500 despite running most of the race by herself.

Orléans resident Devin Biocchi is also hoping to qualify for OFSAA in at least two events and possibly three. The Canterbury High School student easily won the senior boys 400 metres in the morning, and then had enough left in the tank to nip Gordon Cave from St. Patrick's High School at the wire in the 200.

On Thusday it was Cave who came out on top in the 100-meter final as Biocchi had to settle for the silver medal.

The 17-year-old Falligbrook resident has been struggling to gvet over a naggin leg injury and he still isn't quite 100 per cent.

"I probably could have done a lot better, but my hamstring was been feeling really tight. I was trying to run under 22 (seconds) in the 200, but because of the circumstances I didn't run as fast as I wanted to," said Biocchi, who admitted to suffering from a lack of focus on Wednesday. "Going into the 100 I probablay wasn't as focused as should have been. Finishing second kind of woke me up."

Tolu Makinde is also trying to come back off an injury. Last year's 100- and 200-metre champion at the junior level, placed third in both races running ifor the first time in the senior division with times well off his personal best.

Makinde injured his left ankle playing basketball over a month ago, and it's still giving him trouble. He's hoping to work it out next week and at least qualify for the OFSAA championships where he will be trying to keep the senior boys 100- and 200-metre titles in the family. His brother Segun won both races last year.

Aside from Biocchi, McKinnon and Kary, David Nsabua from Louis-Riel was the only other east end athlete to win two events -- doubling up in the senior boys long jump and triple jump.

Fellow Louis-Riel Rebelles Joel MacDonald cam close to accomplishing the feat after winning the midget boys 200-metres, but he placed second in the 100.

Sebastien Saville from Colonel By won the junior boys 800 metres and placed second in both the 400 and the 1500.

Christianne Courtemance from Beatrice-Desloges won the senior girls high jump with a leap of 1.50 metres, and placed second in the shot out. Louis-Riel's Melanie Campeau won the junior girls 3000 metres, but could do no better than third in the 800 and 1500.

Jamie Loh from Cairine Wilson finished in the top three in three events, placing second in both the midget girls 300-metre hurdles and the long jump, and third in the triple jump.

Six other east end athletes walked away from the city championships with a red ribbon including Morgan Lewis from Louis-Riel who placed first in the midget boys 300-metre hurdles; Sylvain Mbuyamba, from Lester B. Pearson won the midget boys long jump and Al Itani won the midget boys triple jump; Josh Rector from Colonel By won the midget boys javelin; Thomas Schlossmacher from Colonel By won the junior boys javelin; and Bailey Arnott from Lester B. Pearson won the senior girls pole vault.
