Varsity Panthers hope to finish season strong with trio of games this weekend
By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online

The Cumberland Panthers Varsity, Junior Varsity and Peewee Varsity teams are hoping to cap their respective regular season schedules with a win on home soil this Saturday as all three teams host the Toronto Thunder at Millennium Park..

The Varsity team will be looking to run the table and finish the regular season undefeated after overwhelming the Newmarket Storm 37-0 on the weekend to improve their record to 7-0-0 in the Wettges East Division.

The Thunder are also undefeated, having won all seven of their regular season games as well. The only thing that separates the two teams in the stat department is on offence where the Panthers have scored 31 points per game compared to the Thunder who have averaged less than 18 points per game. Defensively only nine points separate the two teams.

The Junior Varsity squad is in a must win situation as they take on the Thunder Saturday. After losing a close game to the Pickering Dolphins on June 26, they've posted convincing wins over the Oshawa Hawkeyes and the Guelph Bears to at least give themselves a shot at making the playoffs.

They're currently in a three-way tie for third place in the Wettges East Division with the Thunder and the Kingston Grenadiers. A win over the Thunder on Saturday would assure them a spot in the post season. A loss and their out.

After posting a 5-2-1 record, the Peewee Varsity team doesn't have to worry about making the playoffs -- they've already clinched one of the four wildcard positions -- but a win over the Thunder would give them second place in the Wettges East Division and make them the top seed in the first round.

Since losing two of their first three games, the Panthers have won four in a row including a 15-0 win over the Etobicoke Eagles last week. What makes their record so remarkable is the fact they have been without their starting quarterback and feature running back for most of the season.

While Jaylen King is out for the season with a broken arm, pivot Jacob Molinski is expected to take some snaps this weekend after recovering from a broken collar bone.

The Peewee Varsity team will take the field first at 12 noon, while the Junior Varsity game is scheduled to kick-off at 2:45 p.m. The Varsity game will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
