After finishing a disppointing 11th at last week's East Conference high school cross-country meet, Cameron Slupeiks had a lot to prove at Thursday's National Capital championships.

The Grade 9 Colonel By Secondary School student was determined to finish in the top four and qualify for the OFSAA provincial championships being held at the Hornet's Nest next week. He ended up doing a couple of spots better than that, winning the race outright to capture the gold medal.

Slupeiks will be joined at next week's provincial championships by Lindsay Kary from St. Matthew High School who placed fourth in the senior girls race after finishing first at the East Conference meet last week; Maggie Scheunert from École secondaire publique Garneau who placed second in the junior girls event; and Scott Leboeuf from Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School who made it into the top six in the junior boys race.

Others who qualified from the east end include Erin Karl from Louis Riel and Natasha Wong from Gloucester High School in the midget girls race; and Yannick Morel Banville from Garneau in the midget boys event.

A number of east end runners also qualified for OFSAA by finishing fourth or better in the team event including the Colonel By senior boy and senior girls teams; and the Beatrice-Desloges and Louis Riel midget boys squads.

The OFSAA championships will take place on Saturday Nov. 5.
