The St. Matthew Tigers are heading to the AA provincial high school basketball championships after knocking off the Immaculata Saints 72-62 Wednesday night.

The Tigers got off to a slow start against the Saints. After Sebastien Mangan sunk the first basket of the game, the Saints went on 14-2 run led by Andrew Valencia who made his first three shots from the floor including back-to-back threes.

Mangan did his best to keep the score close in the first quarter, dropping in nine of the Tigers' 11 points, but the Saints matched them shot for shot and ended the quarter with a three ball and a deuce to take a 23-11 lead at the break.

Rather than get down on themselves, the Tigers went on an 11-0 run to start the second quarter and cut the Saints lead to just a point before Immaculata managed to stop the bleeding and responded with a 12-4 run of their own to take a 35-28 halftime lead.

The Saints shot 63 per cent from the floor and 61 per cent from the free throw line in the first half, while the Tigers shot 46 per cent from the floor and 50 per cent for the line.

The Saints got off to a slow start in the third quarter, allowing the Tigers to go on a 10-4 run to make it a one point game once again.

With the score tied at 49 early in the fourth quarter, Ben Rozman made a critical steal that resulted in a pair of free trhows by Mac Wakefield to give the Tigers their first lead of the game.

Once ahead, the Tigers never looked back, stretching their lead to 58-51 on a pair of baskets by Mangan midway throught the quarter. From that point it was all St. Matt's, as the Tigers increased their lead to 14 before cruising to a 72-62 win.

Mangan finished the contest with 21 points and nine rebounds. Rozman scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to finish with 20, and fellow fourth year senior Mike Black added 13. Keonte Mouga, Mac Wakefield and Andrew Bayne rounded out the scoring with six points apiece.

After the game, Rozman and Wakefield both admitted to having pre-game jitters, while Mangan said he was primed and focused from the opening tip.

"I was ready to play. I just wanted to be focused and get the job done," said Mangan who scored 12 of his 21 points in the first half.

During the halftime break, the general consensus in the Tiger dressing room was that they were playing scared. After a pep talk from head coach Jason Wren and assistant coach Chris Wakefield, the Tigers hit the Ravens Nest floor with a diffferent attitude.

"In the first half we played scared, but In the second half we played fierce. We played courageous and ultimately that's what won us the game," said Wakefield.

The Tigers will head to St. Catherines next week where they will try to win the school's second OFSAA basketball crown. St. Matt's won the AAA championship in 2008 when the tournament was held in Ottawa. Mangan was in the stands for the gold medal game.

"After seeing that I knew I wanted to experience that same feeling," said Mangan, who will be looking to end his high school career with a gold medal around his neck along with fellow Grade 12 seniors Wakefield, Rozman and Black.
