The Louis Riel Rebelles went into the NCSSAA AAA/AAAA championship last night as the prohibitive underdogs against the St. Patrick's Irish; and even though they fought like bulldogs, especially on defence, it wasn't enough to topple the new city champions.

The Rebelles dug themselves a major hole in the first quarter, falling behind 20-7. Mariol Shayok did most of the damage in the opening stanza for the Irish scoring eight points including a pair of three-point buckets.

Louis Riel cut the Irish lead to seven by the end of the half, thanks mainly to Cristian Kadima's eight points and a timely three-point basket by Michel Joseph who also sank a pair of clutch free throws.

Down 31-24 at the start of the second half, the Rebelles managed to claw their way back to within two points before the Irish went on an 8-0 run to go up 41-31. Louis Riel then scored 17 of the next 27 points to get to within three with 2:25 left in the game.

St. Patrick's went up by five on a pair of free throws with two minutes left when a scuffle broke out in the stands, forcing officials to send both teams to their locker rooms to allow for a cooling off period.

When play resumed 20 minutes later with 1:26 left on the clock, the Irish extended their lead to seven on a pair of free throws by Ernst Tolete. The Rebelles responded with a three ball from Joseph. to cut tthe deficit to four. They immediately fouled on the inbound pass and the Irish once again made both free throws to go back up by six.

A layup by Kadima cut the lead to four again, but that would be as close as the Rebels would get as the Irish sank their remaining free throws to win the championship 61-55.

Kadima ended the game with a team-high 23 points and six rebounds. Emmanual Bolamba added 10 points despite limited playing time and Afi Ahmed and Michel Joseph had six points each,

Marial Shayok led all scorers with 26 points, but it was from the free throw line that the Irish were most effective, shooting over 82 per cent in the second half and 73 per cent for the game.

Both teams will now prepare for the provincial Quad-A championships which are taking place in Ottawa beginning next week.
