The Louis-Riel Rebelles continued their mastery of the De La Salle Cavaliers on Thursday, beating them for a third time this season to win their third straight senior girls AAA/AAAA volleyball championship.

After winning the first set 25-19 behind the outstanding serving of Catherine Amyot, the Rebelles trailed the Cavaliers by as much as five points in the second set before storming back to score four unanswered points to narrow the deficit to just one.

With the score tied 20-20, the Cavaliers scored three quick points to get to within two points of winning the set and evening the match, but an unforced error would give the serve back to Louis-Riel's Nathalie Campeau who took full advantage of the opportunity by serving out the set.

The winning point came off an excellent dig by Isabelle Amyot who kept the rally alive allowing Natasha Cloutier to deliver a crushing spike.

The come from behind win had the effect of taking the wind out of the Cavaliers sails. The Rebelles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set, and at one point led by as much as six points before De la Salle managed to battle back to tie the score at 17-17 and eventually take a three point advantage.

Trailing 20-17, the Rebelles came from behind once again to win the deciding set and claim their third championship in as many years thanks to Catherine Amyot's three kills and game-deciding tip over the net for the winning point.

The Rebelles will now go for their third straight OFSAA banner. Head coach Frank St. Denis will be counting on his team's veteran leadership at the AAA championship in Waterloo, especially from the big three of Cathrerine Amyot, Nathalie Campeau and Karina Czechowski who was named player of the game despite playing in only her third match since coming back from knee surgery.

Czerchowski tore her ACL during the provincial club championships last April. After going under the knife, she spent the better part of eight months working her tail off to get back into the Rebelles' lineup.

"(The thought of going to OFSAA) really motivated me to work on my exercises and get back on the floor," said Czechowski.

St. Denis will be making his 25th OFSAA appearance in Waterloo and he will be gunning for his 11th medal. As a veteran coach, he knows the Rebelles will have a giant bull's eye on their backs when the tournament starts on March 5.

"We've been in this position before. This is a very good team. We're not as physical as past teams, but we're very tenacious and we're very sound technically," sais St. Denis.

Emily Tousignant and Pascal Nadeau will also be playing in their second OFSAA tournament.
