end teams on roll at OFSAA volleyball championships
By Fred Sherwin
east end is being well-represented at this year's Ontario
Federation of School Athletic Association's volleyball
championships as the Louis Riel Rebelles, the Gisele Lalonde
Titans and the Samuel genest Lazors are so far undefeated
in round robin action.
defending champion Titans have won all four of their round
robin games to advance to the AA quarterfinals in Amhertsberg,
as have the fourth seed Lazors who also ran the table
in round robin play. Meanwhile in Kitchener-Waterloo,
the two-time defending champion Rebels are 2-0 at the
AAA championships in Kitchener-Waterloo with two round
robin games remaining.
Titans have yet to drop a set after downing Norwell District
Secondary School (25-15, 25-18), St. Michael Catholic
High School (25-11, 25-12), Father Henry Carr High School
(25-9, 25-6) and Sutton District High School (25-18, 25-9)
in workmanlike fashion. The Lazors also made short work
of their competition and now the two teams are heading
to the quarterfinals.
Titans will take on the 14th seed Coburg District Collegiate
this afternoon, while Samuel Genest is up against the
number five seed from St. Catherine Eden. Should both
teams win, there's a distinct possibility they will meet
in the semi-finals ina rematch of the NCSSAA championship
final which the Titans won two sets to one.
Rebelles still have to take care of business in Kitchener-Waterloo
if they want to get into the playoffs. In earlier action
today they beat Fellowes High School from Pembroke 25-11,
25-13 and then downed Galt Collegiate from Cambridge 25-23,
Riel is trying to become the first school since 1985 to
three-peat and only the third school to win the OFSAA
AAA championship three times.
