Lady Tigers capture senior girls Tier 2 rugby championship

The St. Matthew Tigers senior girls rugby team capped a perfect season on Thursday with a 7-0 blanking of the West Carleton Wolves to win the NCSSAA Tier 2 rugby championship.

The Tigers came into the final sporting a 8-0 record which included a pair of playoff shutouts against the defending champion Colonel By Cougars and east end rivals the Cairine Wilson Wildcats.

The Wolves were also riding an eight game winning streak which included a 19-14 win over the Holy Trinity Titans in the West Conference Final.

The Tigers got an early try from Allie Cunningham who was set up by an off load from teammate Courtney Rego. Cunningham then converted her own try to give St. Matt's a 7-0 lead.

The score remained that way for the rest of the match, with both teams fighting hard on defense.

As impressive as their season has been, the fact that they managed to do it with only five Grade 12 seniors makes their accomplishment that much more satisfying. It also means a likely promotion to Tier 1 next season.
