The
Cumberland Panthers battled the Gloucester South Raiders
for three quarters of football on Sunday, but in the end
Raiders running back Dimitri "Didi" Vaillaincourt
titled the balance of play in the Raiders' favour with
a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to help his win 28-17.
In
a foreshasowing of what was to come later in the game,
Vaillaincourt broke off a 100-yard touchdown run during
the Raiders second series of the game, only to have it
nullified by an ummecessary roughness call behind the
play.
The
penalty merely delayed the inevitable, however, as Vaillancourt
got his touchdown three plays later on a four-yard through
the middle.
The
Raiders would increase their lead to 14-0 early in the
second quarter after the Panthers turned the ball over
on their 23-yard line. Raiders quarterback Lacellles Lawrence
hit wide receiver Skyler Alexander on third and five for
the major as the Raiders seemed to have things pretty
much in control. That is until, the Panthers offense finally
decided to get into gear.
They
responded with a 77-yard scoring drive, capped by a 30-yard
touchdown run by Kurleigh Gittens. Tristan Tessier's point
after woulf cut the Raiders lead in half.
The
Panthers managed to tie the score in the closing minutes
of the second quarter when Jackson Bennett threw the ball
over the middle to Gittens on a pas and run play that
covered 27-yards.
After
neither team scored in the third quarter, Tessier briefly
gave the Panthers a 17-14 lead in the fourth with a 17-yard
field goal.
The
Panthers led the game for all oa minute and 10 seconds
before Lawrence connected with Vaillancourt on a touchdown
pass on the Raiders' next series and then Vaillancourt
scored a long touchdown run on the series after that to
put the game out of reach..
The
Panthers fall to 5-1 with the loss, while the Raiders
improve their record to 5-0 with two weeks left in the
regular season.
