The
Louis Riel Rebelles are champions once again after downing
the Sir Robert Borden Bengals 1-0 in the NCSSAA 'AA' senior
boys soccer championship on Thursday.
After
a lacklustre opening 10 minutes, the Rebelles turned their
game up a notch in the later stages of the first half,
forcing four corner kicks in the span of a minute and
a half before finally converting one.
Sam
Pierre delivered the game winning strike that fell to
the feet of Grade 12 senior Zach Louis-Seize who converted
if for what turned out to be the game winner.
"I
was just in the right spot at the right time," said
Louis-Seize, who was substituted into the game minutes
before he scored the game winning goal.
The
win is sweet redemption for the Rebelles who lost to John
McCrae in the 'AA' championship last year in a game that
had to be decided in penalty kicks.
The
Rebelles were hoping to get a chance to avenge their loss
to John McCrae, but the Bulldogs were upset by Sir Robert
Borden in the semi-finals.
Louis
Riel's only loss this season was to Deslauriers. They
tied the Bulldogs 1-1 in their only meeting on Sept. 27,
and Ashbury held them to a scoreless draw a week later.
The
OFSAA "AA" provincial championships will be
played next June in Stratford. The boys soccer championships
are traditionally held in the spring.
