In most sports speed kills, but in basketball speed can often be trumped by size which is what happened in the Tier 2 senior girls basketball championship on Thursday as the much quicker St. Matthew Tigers were out-muscled by a much bigger Franco Ouest team.

Of course, it didn't help that the Tigers dug themselves a massive hole during the first 14 minutes of the game, misfiring on 16 of their first 17 shots, including four free throws. In fact, they didn't sink their second basket until the 5:22 mark of the second quarter by which time the Vikings had built up a 15-3 lead.

The Tigers did their best to battle back, and eventually did so when they briefly took the lead at the 6:26 mark of the fourth quarter, but Franco Ouest superior size under the boards and their ability to draw fouls in the paint proved too much for St. Matt's to overcome.

The Vikings hauled in twice as many rebounds (52-27), and took twice as many free throws (30-16) then the Tigers did. Although they shot just as dismally from the floor -- barely 25 per cent -- they made 16 of 30 free throws which proved to be the difference in the game.

Alexe Wilson was especially effective from the line, sinking eight of 11 free throws, including five of six in the all-important fourth quarter. She finished with 14 points and was the game's top scorer, which is remarkable considering she only scored two points in the first half, both from the free throw line.

Her sister Kylea was 6-for-12 from the line and scored 10 points to help the Vikings keep their unblemished record intact and claim the Tier 2 crown.

The Tigers were led by Raiel Chap.m.an and Nathalie Skotnicki who scored 11 points each. Jordan Faris had a difficult day for St. Matt's, going 2-for-25 from the floor with a pair of three point shots, and Hannah Underhill saw her day end early when she fouled out of the game with 5:25 left in the third quarter.

Tigers head coach Rck Despatie summed up the game in a nutshell.

"The first 14 minutes was horrible," said Despatie, "and then we had some bad bounces at the end when it could have gone either way, but really where we lost this game was at the beginning of the game."

The Tigers decided to play Tier 2 this year after they were informed that they wouldn't be eligible to play OFSAA with Skotnicki, who is a Grade 10 transfer from St. Peter, in the lineup.

"It's a new rule this summer. We had to play down. But it's not about me and it's not about trying to go for a championhip. It's about the girls getting a chance to play basketball," said Despatie. "So if we have to play Tier 2 so that everyone can play then so be it."

The Tigers will be back in Tier 1 next year with a solid lineup of second year seniors and juniors who will be moving up from this year's championship team.
