Former
Cumberland Grad and Cumberland Baron Claude Giroux has
been handed the captaincy of the Philadelphia Flyers,
becoming the 19th captain in club history.
Giroux
will take over in the captain's role from Chris Pronger,
who has been sideline with post-concussion syndrome since
Nov. 19.
Giroux
was given the "C" by general manager Paul Holmgren
on Tuesday.
"Claude
is the undisputed leader of this team,"Holmgren said
in making the announcement "He always exhibits a
tremendous work ethic in games and practices. He is a
great professional both on and off the ice."
At
just 25 years of age, Giroux is the fourth youngest captain
in Flyers history behind Eric Lindros (21), Mike Richards
(23) and Bobby Clark (24). The fifth year veteran said
he was honoured to be named the next captain of the storied
hockey franchise.
"Obviously,
this is a huge honour," said Giroux. "There
have been a lot of great captains here in the past. Along
with this comes a lot of responsibility which I am prepared
for. Being named captain is not really going to change
the way I play on the ice and act off the ice. But I am
very excited about this opportunity."
Giroux
is coming off his best season as a professional having
scored 28 goals and 98 points last season, the most by
a Flyer since Eric Lindros scored 93 in 1998-1999.
