St. Peter Knights return from New Brunswick with pair of rugby titles

The St. Peter Knights senior boys and varsity girls rugby teams returned from the pretigious Rothesay Netherwood Rugbyfest tournament in Rothesay, New Brunswick on the weekend with not one, but two championship trophies.

The senior boys team, captained by John Shaw and Ben Amoah, swept all four of their games, giving up just one try to win their third Rothesay title in the past five years.

The Astros scored six in the first, three in the second and two each in the third and fourth innings to give Bedard a huge cushion -- not that he needed it.

The girls, meanwhile, we're able to defend the title they won last year led by captains Catherine Belanger and Erin McCallan. Like the boys, they only gave up one try the entire weekend.

After opening the tournament with a hard fought 7-0 win over the reigning New Brunswick high school champions from Riverview High School, they blew past James M. Hill High School by a 25-0 score and bested St. Malachy's Memorial High School 30-0 to earn a spot in the final where they squeaked past Three Oaks High School from P.E.I. by a score of 8-7.

The boys team managed to outscore their opponents by a total of 136 points to seven. After crushing Belleisle Regional High School 63-0 in their opener, they downed Lockview High School from Fall River, N.S. 17-0, and beat Kings Edgehill High School from Windsor, N.S. 27-7 before thrashing Three Oaks 29-0 for the title in the championhip match.

The local high school rugby season kicks off next week with games across the city.
