Highly-touted, Orléans quarterback commits to Penn State

Former Orleans Bengal Michael O'Connor has committed to go to Penn State University once he graduates from prep schooll next year. File hoto

It's been nearly a year since Orléans native Michael O'Connor decided to pursue his football career south of the border. After enrolling at Baylor Prep School in Tennessee , he immediately started turning heads wth his abilities both on and off the field.

About to enter his final year of prep school after transferring to IMG Academy in Brandenton, Florida last summer, the former Orleans Bengal signed a letter of intent on Friday to play at Penn State University where he will help to rebuild the much maligned Nittany Lions.

Penn State is currently struggling to survive a litany of sanctions imposed by the NCAA last year in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky pedophile scandal.

In deciding to go to Penn State, O'Connor rejected overtures from 11 other Division 1 schools. He made the decision based on academics as well as athletics.

"First off they have a great business program," O'Connor said. He visited the campus in the spring. "I'll get a great education there regardless of what happens on the field. The coaching with Coach (Bill) O'Brien, he does a great job with quarterbacks and they run a pro-style offense."

At 6-foot-4 and 223 lbs., O'Connor is described as a prototypical pocket style quarterback with tons of potential. The only knock against is his speed outside the pocket.

O'Connor led the Orleans Bengals to the NCAFA bantam final in 2011. He also quartebacked the Ashbury Colts to the Conference of Independent Schools of Ontario Athletic Association junior championship that same year before going south of the border.
