Louis Riel loses AAA OFSAA final in heartbreaking fashion
By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online

The Louis Riel Rebelles quest for a provincial soccer championship came to a heartbreaking end on Saturday as they lost to Blessed Trinity High School in penalty kicks.

Louis Riel had battled the Grimsby school to a 1-1 tie through regulation time and two five-minute overtime sessions before they had to go to penalty kicks.

Rebelles coach Joe Fournier made a strategic move by replacing starter Naomi Bianco in goal with penalty kick specialist Bianca Breiding. Unfortunately the move didn't pay off as Blessed Trinity's Taylor Thompson put home the winner to give them the OFSAA AAA gold medal.

The secret to Blessed Trinity's success was keeping the Rebelles Arielle Kabangu off the score sheet.

Earlier in the day, the Rebelles striker scored both of Louis Riel's goals in a 2-1 win over Humberside Collegiate in the semi-finals. She ended the tournament with 14 goals, tops among all goal scorers.
