The St. Matthew Tigers senior girls basketball team is heading back to the OFSAA 'AA' provincial championships after a one year absence thanks to a 60-45 win over the St. Francis Xavier Coyotes in the city title game on Wednesday.

Despite trailing 22-25 at halftime, the Tigers surged into the lead in the third quarter with a 14-3 run spurred by an aggrressive defence and led by Brooklyn McAlear (#14) who turned two steals on two consecutive posessions into a pair of easy layups. Libby Peters (#7) and Jordan Faris (#12) each added a pair of three point baskets to give the Tigers a 39-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

St. Francis managed to narrow the deficit to three points in the final stanza before the Tigers slammed the door shut with a 14-2 run to win going away.

McAlear finished with a game high 22 points, five rebounds and four steals. Eighteen of her points came in the second half and 11 were scored in the all important fourth quarter.

The Grade 12 senior was thrilled to be able to help her team get back to OFSAA.

"I'm so excited. Oh my gosh," said McAlear. "I thought we did really well especially in the second half when our defence was really on the top of its game."

Eight different players managed to get on the score sheet for the Tigers. Peters had a pair of three-point baskets in scoring eight points.

Natalie Skotnicki also scored eight points while hauling down a team high nine rebounds and Jordan Faris and Maddie Wakefield added eight points and six points respectively.

The OFSAA AA championships get underway on Nov. 21 in Windsor.
