The Louis Riel Rebelles won their sixth straight senior girls high school basketball championship Wednesday night and with it earned another shot at the OFSAA provincial championships being held in London later this month.

The Rebelles knocked off a mistake-prone St. Peter Knights team that turned the ball over 15 times in the first half compared to just four turnovers committed by the defending champs.

The game was won and lost in the opening eight minutes as the Rebelles managed to turn four of the Knights' nine first quarter turnovers into eight fast-break points that was part of a 12-2 run.

St. Peter managed to narrow the deficit to four with two points left to go in the second quarter, but that would be as close as they would get as Louis Riel closed out the first half with three unanswered baskets.

The Knights pulled to within nine on several occasions in the second half before the Rebelles closed out the game with a 7-2 run in the final stanza to win 42-28.

Ashley Beaudoin-Polacek and Nicola Hadwen led the way for the Rebelles with 10 points each, while Julia Dostaler added eight points and Andreanne Ennis and Vanessa Gilles scored five points each.

Veronika Lavergne had one of her strongest performances of the season for the Knights. She scored a team high nine points, but it was her play under the basket that kept them in the game. The Grade 11 student hauled down nine rebounds and blocked three shots, both game highs.

Despite winning the high school basketball's top prize for the sixth straight year, Rebelles head coach Andre Desjardins said it never gets boring.

"Every year is a different challenge with a different group of girls," said Desjardins. "We have a lot of girls graduating this year so next year will be another challenge again."

For the time being, Desjardins is focused on trying to improve on their last two trips to OFSAA when they lost in the quarterfinals.

While the Rebelles are heading to the OFSAA AAA championships in London, the Knights will be heading further down the 401 to represent the NCSSAA in the Quad-A championships in Windsor.
