Navan native Erik Bédard signs with fifth big league team

Navan native Erik Bédard will soon be heading to his 11th spring training camp where he will be attempting to join his sixth big league team after signing a minor league contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 34-year-old lefthander broke into the big leagues with the Baltmore Orioles in 2003. He has since played for the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox,.Pittsburgh Pirates, and Houston Astros.

Bédard had four wins in 26 starts for the Astros last season with an ERA of 4.59.

"He's a guy that we've liked in the past, and we're anxious to get him in heree," Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said about Bédard. "He'll come in to compete for the fifth starter job. I don't know how that will transpire, but he's also a candidate to pitch out of the bullpen."
