Major Midget Wolverines settle for silver at provincial basketball championships
Special to Orléans Online

The Gloucester Wolverines Major Midget girls basketball team ended their season with a silver medal performance at the Ontario provincial championships on the weekend.

The Wolverines played hard all weekend, winning three closely fought games and erasing a seven-point deficit in the second half of their semi-final game to advance to Sunday’s final.

The gold medal game was tightly contested affair with the lead changing hands several times between the Gloucester side and the Barrie Royals.

The Wolverines had a chance to tie the score with one second left but the three point attempt brushed the inside of the rim, bounced across the hoop and then rattled off the rim again and out.

After the initial disappointment wore off, the sense of accomplishment at having won a silver medal began to sink in, making the long drive home from Niagara Falls a lot more bearable.

Special thanks go to the coaches, whose dedication throughout the season and their philosophy of fair play and sportsmanship helped mould a wonderful group of girls into better people.

Unfortunately the team will be broken up next year as half the girls will be moving up to the next age group. But friendships were made and the season will always be looked back on with great fondness. Congratulations girls on a job well done.
