Lady Tigers win third NCSSAA hoops crown in four years

The St. Matthew Tigers are heading back to the OFSAA 'AA' girls basketball championships after finishing the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record.

The Lady Tigers are in top form having run the table against all comers in the National Capital Secondary School Athletic Association including wins over the AAA champion St. Francis Xavier Coyotes and Quad-A tilte holders Longfields-Davidson.

Co-coach Rick Despatie says the team is hoping to improve on their consolation final appearance at last year's OFSAA tournament by advancing to the semi-finals.

"We're playing with a lot of confidence right now. We just came back from a tournament in Toronto where we beat a very good U19 team and one of the best midget teams in the province," says Despatie.

A big reason for the team's success is their ability to play an aggressive defence and turn turnovers into points.

"We have one of the next transition games out there. We're quick and we shoot well," says Despatie.

They are also incredibly unselfish and they very seldom, if ever, get into foul trouble, which is an important trait to have when you only have three players coming off the bench.

With enrollment hovering around 700, St. Matt's is by far the smallest schools in the NCSSAA's OFSAA division which makes their continued success that much more remarkable.

They've only lost twice in the past four years - once during the regular season in 2013 and again in the 2012 championship game when they were unable to come back from a dreadful first quarter.

The OFSAA championships will be the last hurrah for four of the team's starters. Brooklyn McAlear, Maddie Wakefield, Elizabeth Peters and Brianna Thompson are all graduating this year.
