The St. Matthew Tigers senior girls basketball team has assured themselves of a shot at playing for a medal on Saturday after advancing to the semifinals of the OFSAA 'AA' tournament in Windsor.

In the first of two games on Friday, the Lady Tigers completely dismantled the J.M Dennison Huskies from Newmarket 60-23.

After a relatively close first quarter in which they struggled to find their shooting range, the Tigers were spot on in the second quarter, outscoring the Huskies 22-7 to take a 33-17 lead into the halftime break.

The second was all St. Matt's as the Tigers used their trademark aggressive defence to force countless turnovers which they converted into points at an efficient rate. They outscored the Huskies 18-4 in the third and 9-2 in the fourth for a well-deserved win.

The afternoon game against the number three seed St. Francis Phoenix from St. Catharines was much closer. After getting on top 14-8 in the first quarter, the Tigers hustled to maintain their advantage through the remainder of the game.

They led by seven points at the half, but by the end of the third quarter their lead had melted down to just three points.

Shear grit and determination got the Tigers through the final stanza and when the final horn sounded they emerged victorious earning a well-deserved 55-51 win.

Libby Peters led the Tigers with 15 points, but it was a true team effort with all five starters contributing on the scoresheet.

With the win the Lady Tigers earned a berth in this morning's semifinals where they will play the number two seed Ecole secondaire catholique Theriault from Timmins. A win would put them through to tonight's gold medal game while a loss would see them play for bronze.
