The St. Peter Knights senior boys rugby team kicked off their season with a workmanlike 19-5 win over the Glebe Gryphons on Tuesday.

James Shaw set up the opening try by Dallas Dunne 15 minutes into the first half. He then scored his first of two tries 10 minutes later. Brett DeSnayer's lone convert of the game would extend the Knights lead to 12-0.

Glebe's one and only try came shortly after the halftime break and capped their only sustained possession of the contest.

The Knights answered right back with Shaw's second try of the game off a scrum five metres out from goal.

The Knights are determined to make it through to the city championship this year for a chance to win back the title they last held in 2013. Shaw's older brother John was a co-captain on that team. Another brother, Billy, won the championship as a member of the Knights in 2011.

Shaw wants to continue the string of a championship every second year with a title of his own and a trip to the OFSAA provincial championship in June.

"We're looking to do what Knights do best, play rugby, and make it through to the city championship," says Shaw.

The junior boys team is also hoping for a shot at a city championship. They kicked off their season with a 40-15 win over the Ashbury Colts led by Roman Cannell who scored four tries and kicked four converts for 28 points. Quinn Nadon and Pierre Hardy Gouombus scored the Knights other two tries and Aidan Bennett added a convert.

Both teams will be at it again next week with the senior boys taking on the Colonel By Cougars and the St. Pius X-Men while the junior squad will face Colonel By and Sir Wilfrid Laurier.

St. Peter's girls team will also see action next week after winning their season opener by forfeit over the Ashbury Colts. The lady Knights will see action against the Merivale Marauders in their quest to win the city championship for a third straight year.
