The Sir Wilfrid Laurier Lancers senior boys rugby team ended their regular season schedule with a second close win over the Gloucester Gators on Tuesday, and in doing so improved their record to a perfect 4-0.

Unlike the seesaw battle in their first meeting, the Lancers jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead over Gators on a pair of tries by Kurleigh Grimes and Javon Reid and a two point convert by Aymane Bengassem.

The Lancers extended their lead to 15-0 early in the second half on a penalty kick from Kyle Carter, which would turn out to be the difference in the game.

The Gators responded with a well-earned try by Robbie Picard and a convert by Youssef Abbadi to narrow the deficit to 15-7.

It only took three minutes for the Lancers to storm back down the field and extend their lead to 20-7 on a try by Jake Bonnell from about 10 metres out. A missed convert into a strong crosswind left Gloucester with an outside chance to either tie the game, or win it with a pair of converted tries.

The Gators narrowed the deficit to eight points on a try by Randy Taylor six minutes later and then made things interesting when Picard scored his second try of the game and Abbadi added a convert to make it a one point game with only two minutes left.

With time running out, the Gators managed to get the ball down to the Lancers' 22 metre line, but that would be as far as they would get before time expired.

Due to a reshuffling of teams in the senior boys division, the Lancers will play Sacred Heart next week for the NCSSAA Tier 1 championship, while the Gators must still wait to see who their opponents will be in the Tier 2 semi-finals.
