Lancers win second close game over Gloucester Gators

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Lancers senior boys rugby team ended
their regular season schedule with a second close win over
the Gloucester Gators on Tuesday, and in doing so improved
their record to a perfect 4-0.

Unlike the seesaw battle in their first meeting, the Lancers
jumped out to a 12-0 halftime lead over Gators on a pair
of tries by Kurleigh Grimes and Javon Reid and a two point
convert by Aymane Bengassem.
Lancers extended their lead to 15-0 early in the second
half on a penalty kick from Kyle Carter, which would turn
out to be the difference in the game.
Gators responded with a well-earned try by Robbie Picard
and a convert by Youssef Abbadi to narrow the deficit
only took three minutes for the Lancers to storm back
down the field and extend their lead to 20-7 on a try
by Jake Bonnell from about 10 metres out. A missed convert
into a strong crosswind left Gloucester with an outside
chance to either tie the game, or win it with a pair of
Gators narrowed the deficit to eight points on a try by
Randy Taylor six minutes later and then made things interesting
when Picard scored his second try of the game and Abbadi
added a convert to make it a one point game with only
two minutes left.
time running out, the Gators managed to get the ball down
to the Lancers' 22 metre line, but that would be as far
as they would get before time expired.
to a reshuffling of teams in the senior boys division,
the Lancers will play Sacred Heart next week for the NCSSAA
Tier 1 championship, while the Gators must still wait
to see who their opponents will be in the Tier 2 semi-finals.
