Peter Knights advance to Tier 1 hoops final

St. Peter Knights senior girls basketball team has advanced
to the NCSSAA Tier 1 championship game after downing the
West Carleton Wolves 42-38 on Thursday.
Knights overcame a slow start to build up a 17-8 lead
by the end of the first quarter, and led by as much as
14 points before the Wolves mounted a fourth quarter comeback
to make things interesting.
West Carleton went on a 9-0 run in the latter stages of
the third quarter to cut the Knights' lead to five points.
Peter would get it back up to eight early in the fourth
stanza, but the Wolves contiinued to chip away at the
deficit until Kennedy Thompson drained her team's only
three-point shot of the contest to make it a four point
game with less than a minute left.
Wolves had a chance to narrow the deficit to two points
with 24 seconds left on the clock, but they missed the
second of two free throws, allowing the Knights to put
the game out of reach with a foul shot with six seconds
the end the difference in the game came down to free throw
shooting. The Knights shot 60 per cent from the line,
while the Wolves only made seven of their 20 free throw
attempts or 35 per cent.
Hayley scored a game high 17 points for the Knights, including
a trio of three-point shots. Chelsea Robert added 11 points
and Taani Mbuluyo contributed a pair of baskets and a
foul shot. Three other players got scored at least two
points in the win.
Thursday's other semi-final, the South Carleton Storm
squeaked by the Earl of March Lions 34-29 to keep their
unbeaten record intact and earn a date against the Knights
in next Monday's final.
