Rangers score three in the third to down Grads in Family Day matinee
By Fred Sherwin
Orleans Online

The Gloucester Rangers and the Cumberland Grads are two teams heading in opposite directions. That much was evident on Monday, as the Rangers scored five power play goals in a 7-3 drubbing of the Grads during a special Family Day matinee game at the Earl Armstrong Arena.

The Rangers are currently locked in a battle for fourth place and home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs against the Carleton Place Canadians, while the Grads are playing out the remainder of the season after being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs over a week ago.

Fabian Walsh got the Grads off to a good start with a goal at the 3:45 mark of the first period, but it took the Rangers all of 23 seconds to eliminate the deficit on a goal by Jordan Fequet. Cumberland then dug themselves a deep hole by taking back to back hooking penalties later on in the period which the Rangers power play managed to convert into as pair of goals less than a minute apart.

Nathan Pancel beat Rangers' starter Brett Ayers for the first power play marker, and Michael McMurtry scored 54 seconds later to give gloucester a 3-1 lead at the break.

The Grads did a good job battling back to tie the game in the second on a pair of goals by Peter Mott and Kevin Tansey, but it was all for not as McMurty's second of the game with 1:42 left in the period put the home team up for good.

The Rangers added three power play goals in the third, including a pair from Pancel, who wound up with a power play hat trick, and a marker from Michael Webley to give the Rangers the 7-3 win.

The third period also included a pair of fisticuffs. Philipe Doucet squared off against Ben Hartley in the first altercation and Tansey dropped the gloves against Mike Lemay 30 second later.

The win allows the Rangers to maintain a two point lead over Carleton Place with four games left to go. They host the Nepean Raiders on Friday, travel to Pembroke on Sunday, and then finish out their regular season schedule with games against Kemptville and Cornwall On March 4 and 5.

The Grads, meanwhile, only have two games left before the off season starts. They host Kemptville next Sunday as part of the Hockey Day in Navan festivities, and then close out the season with a game against Cornwall on March 3.
