Shenkman galleries welcome three new exhibits

By Fred Sherwin
Orléans Online

The work of Ottawa portrait photographer Michelle Valberg will be on display in the Trinity Gallery at the Shenkman Arts Centre this month in an exhibit entitled ‘Arctic Kalidescope’.

The Shenkman Arts Centre is kicking off the New Year with three new art exhibits featuring the work of a well-know Ottawa photographer; a local mouldmaker and sculptor; and a multi-media display by a trio of artists who refer to themselves as the Three Blind Brats.

Michelle Valberg is one of Canada’s best known portrait photographers and a Nikon Canada Ambassador. She is also an award winning wildlife and landscape photographer and one of her favourite places to visit and work is the Arctic.

“Arctic Kaleidoscope” is a collection of images Valberg has shot during her many visits to Canada’s arctic.

Her passion for the North and its people are beautifully portrayed in each and every vivid image. It’s also led to the creation of Project North, a not-for-profit organization committed to delivering education and sport-based opportunities to youth in Canada’s Arctic.

Since the program’s inception in 2009, over $700,000 in new hockey equipment has been delivered to more than 20 Inuit communities.

The “Arctic Kaleidoscope” exhibit can be viewed in the Trinity Gallery Salon A on the ground floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre from January 7 to February 9.

A special vernissage during which members of public can meet the artist will be held on Friday, Feb. 23at 11 a.m.

Nathalie Grice is an Ottawa painter, mouldmaker and sculptor who employs a variety of media in her work. Her dead animal sculptures in their burlesque attire invoke a spirit world that causes the viewer to question their perception of beauty.

“Forêts des Folies” is very much in that same vein. The large-scale sculpture of an idyllic deer family very much brings into question our relationship with nature.

The exhibit can be viewed in the Trinity Art Gallery Salon B from January 7 to February 9. Ms. Grice will also be available to meet the public on Jan. 10.

The AOE Gallery located next to The Trinity Galleries will welcome a new exhibit by the self-proclaimed Three Blind Brats on Jan. in which the collective talents of Corinne Morgan, Oran Frankl and Jacquie Pinard will on display in “Sounds and Silence”.

Pinard’s distinctive style reflects her passion for travel and the outdoors, that is, as she describes it, “a little unusual and challenging”. Her themes often explore the artist realm between reality and imagination, portraying images of trees, friends and remote spaces found off the beaten path and deep within her mind.

The artists will also be in attendance at the vernissage on Jan. 10.

Other exhibits are still ongoing at the Shenkman Centre. The ceramic exhibit featuring the work of Reid Flock will be on display in the Gloucester Pottery School gallery until Feb. 10, and the Promenade Arteast will continue to display various works by Arteast members until Feb. 9.
