Hockey Night in Navan
Grads hope to take stranglehold on CCHL championship series
By Fred Sherwin
April 26, 2024

The Navan Grads will be hoping to take a 3-1 series lead over the Smiths Falls Bears when they vist Smiths Fals for Game 4 tonight. A win would move them just a game away from the Central Canada Hockey League championship.

The Grads will be playing fresh off a 4-1 win over the Bears on home ice Wednesday night. Navan jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead on Colin MacDougall's playoff leading eighth goal of the post season.

After exchanging goals in the second stanza, the Grads got an insurance marker from Sebbie Johnson midway through the third and then kept the Bears at bay the rest of the way. The final blow was delivered by Devon Savignac who scored into an empty net with eight seconds left after Smiths Falls pulled their goalie in favour of an extra attacker.

The Grads won the opening game of the series 3-2 in overtime. The Bears then bounced back to win Game 2, 4-3 in overtime to even the series at a game a piece.

A win tonight would give the Grads a 3-1 lead in the best of seven final series. Should the Bears win, the series would boil down to a best of three. If the Gards do win, they will have a chance to wrap the series on home ice on Sunday. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
