The St. Peter Knights flag football team had a rough day on Thursday, tying their east end rivals from Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School 14-14 before losing their first game of the season 8-0 to Osgoode High School.
The Knights easily won their first two games of the season last week, beating École secondaire catholique Garneau 18-6 and then shutting out École secondaire publique Louis-Riel 8-0.
On Thursday, they looked like they would continue their winning ways when Anna Rioux intercepted a pass on the opening play of the game and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown. The Knights then added a two point conversion on a pass from Liv Lavoie to Melissa Gour to take the early 8-0 lead.
The Lancers eventually responded with an interception of their own to set up a scoring drive that was with a 10-yard touchdown pass from Noelle Levy to Jordyn Pemberton on fourth and goal.
A missed two-point conversion play would leave Sir Wil trailing the Knights 8-6.
St. Peter had a golden chance to extend their lead near the end of the first half when Sir Wil was penalized for roughing the passer, giving the Knights a first and goal from the 10 yard line. Unfortunately, they were able to take advantage of the situation and the score remained 8-6 in favour of the Knights at half-time.
St. Peter would get another opportunity to score early in the second half and this time they made the most of it when Lavoie found Dominique Rioux in the end zone to put the Knights up 14-6.
A missed two-point convert play following the touchdown would prove pivotal as the Lancers put together a scoring drive late in the game to draw within two points and then tie the game on a two-point conversion pass from Levy to Maeva Tremblay, who also caught the touchdown pass.
After having to settle for a 14-14 tie, the Knights were only able to take a 15 minute break before taking the field again to play the Osgoode Panthers who would win the game 8-0.
The Panthers then had to play a well-rested Lancers squad which took advantage of the situation by rolling to a 15-6 win over Osgoode and improved their record to 3-0-1.
Both St. Peter and Sir Wil now have a week off before resuming play on May 21 when St. Peter will plan Gisèle-Lalonde and Béatrice-Desloges in a double-header and Sir Wil will face Louis-Riel and Garneau.
