A total of 24 east end athletes and seven relay teams have qualified for the OFSAA provincial track and field championships after finishing in the top four in their respective events at the OFSAA East Regional qualifying meet in Ottawa this week.
École secondaire publique Louis-Riel lead the way with nine athletes qualifying in their individual events, while six relay teams made the grade including all four girls relay teams. Colonel By wasn't far behind with four athletes qualifying for provincials and one relay team.
École secondaire publique Gisèle-Lalonde and Gloucester High School will be sending three athletes to each to OFSSA, while St. Peter High School, Sir Wilfrid Laurier Secondary School and École secondair catholique Béatrice-Desloges will be sending two athletes each. École secondaire catholique Garneau and Collège Mer-Bleue will be each be sending one athlete to OFSSA.
All told, east end athletes won 11 individual event titles and five relay finals. All five relays were won by teams from École secondaire publique Louis-Riel, including a clean sweep of the girls 4x100 relays and the openboys 4x400 relay.
Among the individuals who stood out was Louis-Riel's Mallea McMullin who set a new meet record in the junior girls javelin, and Zachary Jeggo who did the same in the senior boys 400 metres. Both athletes not only set new records but they did so in emphatic fashion.

McMullin out-threw her nearest rival in the junior girls javelin event by more than 10 metres and broke the old record of 40.01 metres not once, but twice in the process, including a mighty heave of 42.60 metres on her second attempt. The old record had stood for 17 years.
Jeggo broke an even older record in the senior boys 400. Fresh off his record setting performance at the National Capital championships last week in which he ran a 47.90, Jeggo covered the distance on Thursday in 46.97 seconds, beating his nearest rival by 1.5 seconds and smashing the old record set in 2002 by over a second.
Jeggo also won the 400-metre hurdles, making him one of only three east end athlete to win two events. The other was felow Louis-Riel Rebelles, Daniel Cova, who won the seniors boys 1500 metres and 3,000 metres, and Colonel By's Laila Label who did the same in the junior girls 1500 and 3,000. Jeggo is also a member of Louis-Riel's senior boys 4x100 relay team and he and Cova helped lead the school's open boys 4x400 relay team to victory.
There were a handful of other eyebrow raising results turmed in by Orléans-area athletes at regionals. After barely qualifying for the junior boys high jump with a sixth place performance at the National Capital championships last week, Sir Wilfrid Laurier's Nathan Welsness won the event on Thursday with six straight clearances including a winning leap of 1.75 metres.
Sticking with the high jump, Louis-Riel's Danika Smith won the junior girls event with a leap of 1.50 metres on Thursday. That's 20 centimetres higher than what she jumped last week when she placed fourth.
Other event winner this week were Elijah Assouan from Gisèle-Lalonde in the novice boys 200 metres, Jorai Ma Oppong-Nketiah from Louis-Riel in the senior girls 100, and Timeo Atonfo from Gisèle-Lalonde in the senior boys triple jump.
